His literary debut, Wildwood, is a middle-grade fantasy (middle-grade is publisher-speak for Young Young Adult) set in an alternate-reality version of Meloy’s hometown, Portland, Ore., in which adventure and magic have replaced flannel and independent coffee houses. The Decemberists' new album, The King is Dead, comes out Jan. 18.

When we last left Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy, he'd steered his band and his songs to new levels of theater, creating the sprawling rock opera The Hazards of Love. In that project, the sound was as rich as the story, exhibiting justifiable excess. (If you've written the role of a jealous, rebuking royal, why not let Shara Worden belt it out?)

On The King Is Dead, Meloy prepares listeners for change in his opening line: "Here we come to a turning of the season." It not only signals different lyrical themes, but also provides an introduction to a new musical lightness for The Decemberists. The new record opts to tame the band's indulgences, and also reroutes its musical focus: Instead of pointing solely to the British folk that has long inspired him, Meloy digs deep into the American roots-music lexicon, even merging the two in the sea shanty/mining tune "Rox in the Box."

From the R.E.M. nod in "Calamity Song" (which features Peter Buck) to the mountainized "Honky-Tonk Woman" intro of "All Arise!," this is a sort of tribute album with no cover songs, as well as a rock record with roots. And who better to serve as co-pilot on that journey than Gillian Welch, who appears on a majority of The King Is Dead's 10 tracks?

Although her role is more backup singer than duet partner, Welch's tone provides a grounding counterpoint to Meloy, as well as a perfect symbol of the songs' surprising lyrical restraint. This is where much of the lightness comes in: Some of the references are literal, as burdens are shared in "Don't Carry It All" and snow is cleared to "green the ground below" in the chilled beauty of "January Hymn." But, unlike the winter season, stripping away layers has a warming effect here. Whether the stories are personal or not, they feel like they are as a result of the sparse and direct arrangements.

During a recent interview at WFUV, Meloy describes this shift as an entirely intentional contrast to Hazards, but he also discovered in making The King Is Dead that "no music is easy — even the simple songs can be really hard." Making them sound effortless and timeless, however, is an art.
The King Is Dead will be available for streaming in its entirety here until its release on Jan. 18.

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary by David Sedaris

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

David Sedaris always makes me laugh to tears, and even though this book did not exactly have that effect on me, I still enjoyed reading his "fables" (he prefers to call them animal tales because he says that fables have morals and he doesn't) and discovering what Sedaris can do when he ventures into the fiction territory. The format of the book was very appealing, enriched with illustrations by Ian Falconer, author and illustrator of Olivia (one of my favorite children's books), which provided a kind of creepy contrast to some of the darker tales.
My favorite stories were the one about the squirrel and the chipmunk and the one about the owl and the hippopotamus. In the fist one, a squirrel and a chipmunk go on a date and the chipmunk, who doesn't know what jazz is, tells the squirrel that she enjoys it too for fear of sounding ignorant but is then terrified by the possibility that jazz is something horrible: "The chipmunk lay awake that night, imagining the unpleasantness that was bound to take place the following morning. What if jazz was squirrel slang for something terrible, like anal intercourse? 'Oh, I like it too,' she'd said -and so eagerly! Then again, if could just be mildly terrible, something along the lines of Communism or fortune-telling, subjects that were talked about but hardly ever practiced. Just as she thought she had calmed herself down, a new possibility would enter her mind, each one more terrible than the last. Jazz was the maggot-infested flesh of a dead body, the crust on an infected eye, another word for ritual suicide. And she had claimed to like it!"
The last story of the book is about a grieving owl, whose thirst for knowledge, love for awkwardness, and acceptance of unlikely friendships "so far-fetched they simply had to be true" reminded me a lot of myself and made me smile long after I finished reading the book.

The House on Fortune Street by Margot Livesey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was the first book I've read by Margot Livesey and I was not disappointed. The novel is divided in four parts, each one told in the first person from the perspective of a different main character. There is a secret, a tragedy, and a failed relationship. I found it interesting to read what their theories were about each other's situations and how they all thought they knew the others better than they really did.
In a way, this is also a novel about people looking for the truth and coming to terms with their own reality. I also liked that each character had a "literary godfather", as Livesey puts it, and I enjoyed learning more about these artists along the way. My favorite was the second section, told by Cameron, Dara's father.
This novel made me feel like I was reading a thriller, even though the book has a different feel to it. Because you get to hear a different version of the truth in each of the sections, you don't know what really happened until the very end; this keeps the story suspenseful and keeps the reader interested in the story, which is impressive since the secret, the tragedy, and the failed relationship are revealed early in the book.

Eva Moves the Furniture: A Novel by Margot Livesey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a sad, lonely, lovely novel. It is a story about family, loss, ghosts, the past, and all of those elements intertwined in a complex way. Eva's mom dies when she is a day old, she grows up to stories of her mother told by her father and aunt. Her life is also determined by the presence/absence of two "companions", who are only visible to her.
This is a short, quiet novel, but one I highly recommend because of its acceptance of the line between reality and imagination, dreams and the ordinary, fantasy and fact. The whole novel reads like a long poem, it has a dreamy, soothing quality to it. I am usually attracted to books that are set in or tell stories of backgrounds I know nothing about, and this story set in the Scottish countryside in the early 19th century definitely painted a beautiful picture in my mind.

The Decemberists Announce 'The King Is Dead'

For those who weren't on board with 2009's lavish rock opera The Hazards of Love, Colin Meloy and company are giving you another variation on their brand of theatrical, literate indie pop. Direct Current Music and a handful of other sources report that on Jan. 11, The Decemberists will release The King Is Dead. It's the band's sixth full-length album, their third for Capitol Records, and most likely not their first Morrissey bon mot.

Possibly attributable to the influence of special guest Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Meloy promises listeners a more straightforward, folk-rock approach on The King Is Dead — and it shows in "Down By the Water" and some of other new tunes the band has been playing live. You should still probably keep a thesaurus handy and the Wikipedia entry on the 19th century bookmarked.

Next Big Thing in English: Knowing They Know That You Know

To illustrate what a growing number of literary scholars consider the most exciting area of new research, Lisa Zunshine, a professor of English at the University of Kentucky, refers to an episode from the TV series “Friends.”

Phoebe and Rachel plot to play a joke on Monica and Chandler after they learn the two are secretly dating. The couple discover the prank and try to turn the tables, but Phoebe realizes this turnabout and once again tries to outwit them.

As Phoebe tells Rachel, “They don’t know that we know they know we know.”

This layered process of figuring out what someone else is thinking — of mind reading — is both a common literary device and an essential survival skill. Why human beings are equipped with this capacity and what particular brain functions enable them to do it are questions that have occupied primarily cognitive psychologists.

Now English professors and graduate students are asking them too. They say they’re convinced science not only offers unexpected insights into individual texts, but that it may help to answer fundamental questions about literature’s very existence: Why do we read fiction? Why do we care so passionately about nonexistent characters? What underlying mental processes are activated when we read?

To some extent, “Greenberg,” like nearly all of Mr. Baumbach’s work

is a comedy of manners.

Mr. Baumbach’s sense of character and place is so precise — the film seems so transparent, so real — that his formal audacity almost passes unnoticed. Rather than push Roger and Florence through the grinding machinery of an overdetermined plot, he allows them to wander and sometimes to stall, to inhabit their lives fully and uneasily. They are more like characters in a French movie than the people you usually meet under the Hollywood sign.

Only at the end, in the wake of a brilliantly executed party sequence — in which Roger, the solitary Gen-Xer, finds his world of defensive ironies and carefully preserved pop cultural references overrun and trashed by a swarm of Millennials — does his arc, as residents of Hollywood might call it, become apparent. Mr. Baumbach abruptly, and with a subtle display of self-conscious wit, reveals “Greenberg” to have been a romantic comedy all along.

The real problem with happiness is neither its pursuers nor their books; it’s happiness itself. Happiness is like beauty: part of its glory lies in its transience. It is deep but often brief (as Frost would have it), and much great prose and poetry make note of this. Frank Kermode wrote, “It seems there is a sort of calamity built into the texture of life.” To hold happiness is to hold the understanding that the world passes away from us, that the petals fall and the beloved dies. No amount of mockery, no amount of fashionable scowling will keep any of us from knowing and savoring the pleasure of the sun on our faces or save us from the adult understanding that it cannot last forever.

Annie Hall is a film with many great moments, and for me the best of them is the movie's single scene with Annie's younger brother, Duane Hall, played by Christopher Walken, the first of his long, brilliant career of cinema weirdos. Visiting the Hall family home, Alvy Singer — that's Woody Allen — bumps into Duane, who immediately shares a fantasy:

"Sometimes when I'm driving . . . on the road at night . . . I see two headlights coming toward me. Fast. I have this sudden impulse to turn the wheel quickly, head-on into the oncoming car. I can anticipate the explosion. The sound of shattering glass. The . . . flames rising out of the flowing gasoline."

It's Alvy's reply which makes the scene: "Right. Well, I have to — I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth."

By the time Warner joined this new specialty business 10 years later, with Warner Independent Pictures, all the studios were in the indie business. Films like Spike Jonze’s “Where the Wild Ones Are” and Steven Soderbergh’s “Informant!,” both released by Warner, might represent the end of that era. Even so, I like to believe that the industry’s central irrationality (its human factor) will remain and that there will always be one madman willing to give an artist like Wes Anderson millions to make a puppet movie about a family of foxes.

And Colin Firth’s face crumbling like pulverized stone as he receives the awful news of his lover’s death in “A Single Man.” Some of the greatest filmmaking of the year was represented by the story of a happy marriage, which was represented with breathtaking narrative economy and a great depth of feeling in four sublime minutes in “Up.”

A restless camera tracing lines of love among grieving family members in “Summer Hours,” a French film poignantly true to everyday life and emotions and almost impossible to imagine being made in America if only because of its insistence on ambivalence as a condition of human relations.

At times this adaptation of Roald Dahl’s slender anti-fable — truer to the spirit than to the letter of the source — does not even look like a movie. In spite of the pedigreed voices (Meryl Streep and Bill Murray, along with George Clooney in the title role), it feels more like an extended episode of what progressive educators call imaginative play. The sets might just as well have been built out of available household stuff, the stiff figurines animated and ventriloquized on a classroom or bedroom floor by precocious children.

All of which may only be another way of saying that this is a Wes Anderson film.

His live-action subjects often move like stop-motion figures through landscapes that resemble drawings and models more than real places. (Think of the cutaway ship set in “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.”) There is a deadpan, understated quality to his performers that also suggests puppetry, and he shows a stubborn reluctance to let story take precedence over style.

Is it is a movie for children? This inevitable question depends on the assumption that children have uniform tastes and expectations. How can that be? And besides, the point of everything Mr. Anderson has ever done is that truth and beauty reside in the odd, the mismatched, the idiosyncratic. He makes that point in ways that are sometimes touching, sometimes annoying, but usually worth arguing about. Not everyone will like “Fantastic Mr. Fox”; and if everyone did, it would not be nearly as interesting as it is. There are some children — some people — who will embrace it with a special, strange intensity, as if it had been made for them alone.

Manhood for Amateurs: The Pleasures and Regrets of a Husband, Father, and Son by Michael Chabon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Even though it took me a while to get through this book, I have to say that I enjoyed it greatly. Michael Chabon is one of those writers that make me want to write for the rest of my life. He is just so brilliant.
I welcome his adventures in the non-fiction territory, and even though I am not a Jewish male in his 40s, I found a lot of what he had to share to be very relevant to my life. Some of the essays had me rejoicing with nerdery, some of them moved me deeply.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this book five stars is that although I am most of the way there with him on almost every topic, sometimes his geeky comics and science fiction knowledge (and the showing off of this knowledge) can make me a little edgy and I lose interest. However, his observations about reading, writing, relationships, and purpose were extremely interesting. His essays about childhood and how being a child has changed in the last forty years in this country were fascinating. I had heard three of them before, in a reading that Michael Chabon did during his visit to my university campus last year, but reading them made me appreciate his eloquent carefulness with language and choice of words. Moreover, his description of his younger son's mild OCD and his issues with symmetry (as one of the kinds of OCD) got me thinking about the last book I read.
I highly recommend this book to those of you who are feeling reflective about life lately.

Alice Munro’s Object Lessons

The Germans must have a term for it. Doppelgedanken, perhaps: the sensation, when reading, that your own mind is giving birth to the words as they appear on the page. Such is the ego that in these rare instances you wonder, “How could the author have known what I was thinking?” Of course, what has happened isn’t this at all, though it’s no less astonishing. Rather, you’ve been drawn so deftly into another world that you’re breathing with someone else’s rhythms, seeing someone else’s visions as your own.

One of the pleasures of reading Alice Munro derives from her ability to impart this sensation. It’s the sort of gift that requires enormous modesty on the part of the writer, who must shun pyrotechnics for something less flashy: an empathy so pitch-perfect as to be nearly undetectable. But it’s most arresting in the hands of a writer who isn’t too modest — one possessed of a fearless, at times, fearsome, ambition.

Munro’s own contrarian streak is displayed in the structure of her narratives. Many writers begin a story in medias res, but a Munro story is liable to end in the middle of things — that is, well before (or well beyond) the moment when a reader expects to find resolution. The very shape of things, along with our sense of what is important and why, seems to shift as we proceed. The real story keeps turning out to be larger than, and at canted angles to, what we thought it would be. The effect is initially destabilizing, then unexpectedly affirming.

In the introduction to her 1996 volume of “Selected Stories,” Munro reveals an endearing idiosyncrasy: “I don’t always, or even usually, read stories from beginning to end. I start anywhere and proceed in either direction.” She goes on to explain that she doesn’t read in order to find out what happens so much as to experience the world of the story, to inhabit it for a while, “wandering back and forth” in it, discovering the ways it alters her perspective. This Alice-in-Wonderland propensity, this inclination to regard fiction as a dynamic creation and the reader as a mutable participant, may provide a key to reading Munro. More than that, it suggests something provocative about the uses of fiction, about its moral purpose as well as its potential to have an impact on our lives.

A: I’m not a big fan of the IM from people I dont know. That doesn’t mean we probably wouldn’t get along champion, but the nature of the IM freaks me out a little.
